Why Your Pool Filter Matters
Your pool filter does the heavy lifting when it comes to water clarity. It catches dirt, debris, oils, and tiny particles that make water cloudy. But here's what many pool owners don't realize: filters need regular deep cleaning to work properly. Just like the vacuum cleaner in your house, a pool filter gets clogged with all the stuff it removes from your water. When that happens, your circulation slows down, your water quality suffers, and your equipment has to work harder.
At AquaLift Fremont Pool Care, we provide professional filter cleaning services for all three types of pool filters: cartridge, sand, and DE (diatomaceous earth). Each type has different cleaning requirements and schedules. We know exactly what your specific filter needs and when it needs it, so you get maximum performance and cleaner water.
Regular filter maintenance is an essential part of complete pool care. It prevents problems, extends the life of your equipment, and keeps your water sparkling clear. Many homeowners skip this step or don't do it often enough, and then they wonder why their pool never looks quite right.
Understanding Your Filter Type
Not all pool filters are the same. Here's what you need to know about the three main types and how we clean each one:
Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters use pleated fabric elements to trap debris. They're popular in Fremont because they're efficient and relatively easy to maintain. We remove the cartridges, spray them down with high pressure water to flush out trapped particles, and inspect them for wear or damage. Cartridges typically need cleaning every 4 to 6 months, and replacement every 1 to 2 years depending on use.
Sand Filters
Sand filters use a tank filled with special filter sand that catches particles as water passes through. These need regular backwashing (which we do during weekly service) plus occasional deep cleaning to remove oils and compacted debris. The sand itself should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.
DE Filters
DE filters provide the finest filtration, using a powder made from fossilized organisms. They need backwashing, fresh DE powder added, and periodic deep cleaning of the internal grids. We disassemble the filter, clean each grid thoroughly, check for tears or damage, and reassemble everything properly with fresh DE powder. These are the most maintenance-intensive filters, but they also provide the clearest water when properly maintained.
Our Filter Cleaning Service
When we clean your pool filter, we do it right. Here's what our service includes:
- •Complete filter inspection to assess condition and cleaning needs
- •Proper disassembly following manufacturer specifications

If we find that your filter needs replacement rather than cleaning, we'll give you a clear explanation and a fair quote. We work with quality replacement filters and can handle the full installation. We can also help with other equipment repairs if your pump, heater, or other components need attention.
Signs Your Filter Needs Attention
How do you know when your filter needs professional cleaning? Watch for these warning signs:
- •Water clarity isn't what it used to be, even with proper chemicals
- •Pressure gauge shows high pressure (8-10 PSI above normal operating pressure)
- •Water flow from return jets is noticeably weaker
- •It's been more than 6 months since your last deep cleaning
- •Your pump is running longer or working harder than normal
- •You recently treated a green pool or algae problem
Don't wait until your filter completely fails. Regular cleaning prevents expensive repairs and keeps your pool water clear year-round. We can set you up on a regular maintenance schedule so you never have to worry about it.
